Tutorial No.1 – Shutter Speed

When we photographers refer to shutter speed, we’re talking about how long the film (or the digital sensor) is exposed to light coming through the lens.
The actual shutter is at the back of the camera right in front of the film/sensor and can open and close from top to bottom or open and close from side to side.

Life Updates

This update comes in three parts!

1) In an attempt to keep up with photographing and photo-blogging (phlogging?) more often, I’m going to be positing a series of photo tutorials starting off with beginning photographer’s lessons working more towards artistic techniques and themes for more advanced students. The first tutorial will be a quick one and will be covering shutter speed. Hopefully we’ll get a’rollin’ after that.

2) I recently got accepted for having my own exhibition in a small gallery called Gallery 25 in Mildura, Australia. The show will be called “Hestur” which means “horse” in Icelandic and will feature images for horses I’ve taken over the years in the USA, New Zealand, and Iceland. I’m thinking that most photos will be in black and white, but am not setting myself to limitations. I think later on, as I develop the project, I’ll post more ideas on inspiration, project aims, etc.

3) A couple of my friends and I are going to be starting an art blog in the near future. Right now it’s still in planning, but we’ve got some ideas on what we’ll be posting about and how we’ll present everything. I’m very excited about this because we’re all college graduates, studying art, seeking challenges, critiques, and inspiration… a blog would be perfect for us, especially since we all live in different parts of the world. As soon as things become concrete for this, I’ll be posting more about it.

Until then, continue checking for updates and tutorials!

Tattoos in Australia – New Photos

A new gallery of ten analogue photos have been put up from a tattoo session in rural Australia. Hopefully there will be more to come as I’m quite pleased with these even though I over developed them by accident.
Zara is a great tattoo artist who operates out of her home in rural New South Wales. The quirkiness and funky vibes of her studio home create an environment that is irresistible to photograph. Add some excited customers, harsh sunlight, and you’ve got an absolutely perfect atmosphere.

Fence Hopping

When I was doing my residency in New Zealand in November, I would go on daily walks. Sometimes I would wander around neighboring farm’s pastures, other times I would walk down the highway and down side roads into the hills. Since the residency was surrounded by sheep and cow paddocks, it was common to see places to cross the fences. This one was right next to the house, hidden among some plants taller than me with fronds that could slice your face open. I remember hopping across this spot many times, listening to music, holding my camera. Good times.
